Dear Parents,

One of my favorite times of the year is fast approaching! Conferences will be held Wednesday, October 25 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and Thursday, October 26 from 1:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. I will also be offering conferences on Monday, October 16 and Monday, October 23 from 7:00 a.m.-8:00 a.m. Students will be released at 12:30 p.m. on October 25 and 26 and there is no school on Friday, October 27. Parents now have the ability to schedule conference times online. The Conference Scheduler is available starting Monday, October 9. Scheduling early offers you the opportunity to secure conference times that work best for your family. Please visit the online scheduler at: www.asdk12.org/parents. You will need go to mix and find my name and you will find my schedule. If you are not able to use the online system, please call or email. I look forward to meeting with you all and celebrating your child’s progress.
I want to let you know about our next scheduled field trip on Thursday, November 2 so you can put it on your calendar. We will be walking to the Performing Arts Center to see Junior Theater’s “Journey to Oz”. We’ll leave the school at about 9:15 and return at about 11:30. This should be a fun show.
I have had several questions about homework and spelling tests, so I would like to answer them in today’s letter. The homework I send home is not meant to be overbearing for your child. If your child is spending more than 10-15 minutes on the spelling homework, then it is too much. The goal of the homework is to practice the words that will help their reading, writing and vocabulary development and have them set aside time away from television and electronics doing something productive. Setting aside 20 minutes a night to read to your child and have them read to you is also important as well. The spelling tests themselves are simply how well your child memorizes a list of words. I want the children to be successful in this. If your child is not satisfied with his or her score, he or she may retake the test at home and send in the results. The goal of the spelling tests is for the students to notice those spelling patterns and use them in their own writing and reading. I have four children and know the demands on the family time. If you have limited time in a week, always choose the reading first. If your child is not ready for the test that week, they always have the option of retaking the test at home. I hope this helps.
This week the students have been working furiously learning about alphabetical order, adjectives, spelling, math facts and operations, writing letters, the sun and seasons, problem solving, science experiments, and more! It has been a fabulous week of learning and exploration!
If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at moyer_craig@asdk12.org or call or write me a note.

Sincerely,

Craig Moyer
