Thursday, September 28, 2017

Dear Parents,

I want to let you know about our next scheduled field trip on Thursday, November 2 so you can put it on your calendar. We will be walking to the Performing Arts Center to see Junior Theater’s “Journey to Oz”. We’ll leave the school at about 9:15 and return at about 11:30. This should be a fun show.
3rd graders, Julia and Sage, have started a school-wide fundraiser for hurricane victims. All on their own, they created posters and researched where the money should go (The Red Cross). So far, they have raised over $50. If you would like to donate, please send it in by Friday, October 6. Thanks.
The students are settling in nicely to the work cycle and have been working on setting goals and fine-tuning on how they can be more productive. This week we have been working on lines, rays, segments, and 3-dimensional shapes in geometry, writing, spelling, math facts and operations, adjective and article work in grammar, alphabetizing, reading activities, phonics, penmanship, spelling and more.
If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at moyer_craig@asdk12.org or call or write me a note.

Sincerely

Dear Parents,

Thursday, September 28 is Picture Day at Denali! I have sent home order forms in today’s folder. Please have your child practice his or her smile this week
I hope you have a chance to take a look at our first bulletin board of the year when you stop by. Third grader, Annaliza, designed the bulletin board with the slogan, “You Will Go Far Room 177”. The students colored a hiker body and another student took face pictures to put on top of the body. Annaliza then put it altogether. It really is a great bulletin board and I must say I haven’t looked this good in years. Students took over the job of creating the bulletin boards years ago when I realized that the students have much better ideas and creations than I do. Please stop by and check out Annaliza’s wonderful work!
The students have really been working hard this work concentrating, persevering, and creating a peaceful learning environment. It’s been very nice to see all the students engaged in learning. I have been really impressed with the first graders and how they have adapted to so much change in their lives. We have also been working on alphabetical order, adjectives and articles, math facts and operations, guided reading groups, story writing, writing letters (Thank you and friendly), place value, penmanship and more! I love working with your children.
Thank you for all the can food that has been coming in to help families in need. We will continue to collect nonperishable food items. Please drop them off on the table next to the office.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at moyer_craig@asdk12.org or call or write me a note. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Craig Moyer

The class at the Apple Store!
Thursday, September 7, 2017

Dear Parents,

I can’t tell you how impressed I was with your children last week during our trip to the Apple Store last week. They were safe, well-behaved, engaged in the learning experience, sharing and exchanging ideas. It was impressive to see. The students and I had a lot of fun with the “Coding with Sphero” experience that was a last-minute change to our program. The students had to program the Sphero robot to do various tasks, so there was a lot of trial and error, planning, measuring, thoughtful work going on. If you are interested in purchasing a “Sphero” for the class, we would love it.
Our second field trip of the year will be on Wednesday, September 13. We will be taking a bus to Pyrah’s Farm in Palmer. This is a great trip that the entire primary wing is attending. Chaperones please meet in Room 177 by 9:00. We will leave the school at 9:20 a.m. and should return at about 2:00 p.m. I have sent home permission slips in today’s folder of all those that have not returned a permission slip. Please return them as soon as possible. Thank you to Ms. Homan, one of our wonderful primary teachers, for making this trip possible!
Please mark your calendars for Thursday, September 14 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. This is your chance to visit the classroom and find out more about the Montessori program at the Denali Open House. I look forward to seeing you then.
I have included your child’s spelling and reading homework in today’s folder. This spelling work is due on Friday, September 15 and the students will be tested on that day as well. Last week’s words will be tested tomorrow.
It’s been another great week in Room 177! The 2nd and 3rd graders have been great role models this year in their work effort and citizenship. The 1st graders have been following along and are working very well. It’s been a lot of fun to see. We have been studying spelling words, nouns, compound words, rhyming words, penmanship, reading, place value, math facts and operations, geometry, writing our own creation stories, thank you letters, and friendly letters. I really enjoy working with your children and observing their growth.

Thank you to Cole’s Mom, who has graciously given her time to fill our Thursday folders each week. I appreciate it!
If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at moyer_craig@asdk12.org or call or write me a note.
