Special Notice

Mr. Horning, one of our wonderful P.E. teachers here at Denali Montessori, is starting his three-week cross-country skiing sessions next Wednesday, February 1. We will then continue the next two Wednesdays, February 8 and February 15. Our time is from 10:10-11:10. The students ski on the Park Strip and have a great time every year. If your child wants to bring his or her own boots and skis, he or she is welcome to do that. Parents are welcome to join the class for the ski session as well. Please have your child bring snow pants, gloves, hats and gloves so they can enjoy themselves. Thank you to Mr. Horning for this great opportunity for our students!

My son has been sick this week and it was my turn to stay home with him on Tuesday and Wednesday. Mr. Mason is one of our wonderful visiting teachers that the students really enjoy and was able to be here while I was out. Mr. Mason said the students continued to be engaged in learning activities and he enjoyed his time in Room 177. I appreciate Mr. Mason’s expertise and the students’ cooperation and focus on learning. It is good to be back.
Our next scheduled field trips are Thursday, February9, Friday, February 10 and Tuesday, February 21. We will be taking a bus to West High on Thursday, February 9 to see West High’s musical production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”. We will need drivers for this trip. I will need all drivers to return their insurance information to the office by next Friday, February 3. We’ll leave the school at about 12:20 and return about 2:30. On Tuesday, February 21we will walk to the Alaska Public Lands Information Office on 4th Avenue and do a scavenger hunt and watch a film on Alaska animals. We will leave the school at about 12:15 and should return by about 3:00. I have sent permission slips home in today’s folder for these trips. Please send them back as soon as possible.
Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, February 22 and Thursday, February 23. The conference scheduler will be available for you to schedule conferences on Zangle beginning on Friday, February 3. Follow this linkhttps://share.asdk12.org/support/conference-scheduler/SitePages/Home.aspx and it will take you to the scheduling page. When it gives you the options for grade level, choose mixed and my name should appear in the choices. If you are going on vacation and would like to schedule your conference before you leave, send me an email of the time you would like to meet and I can put it into the system before February 3. I love conference time and talking about your children and all the wonderful things they are doing.
On Tuesday, February 14 we will have a valentine exchange and snack in the afternoon. If your child wishes to participate in the exchange, he/she must bring a valentine for each student. I have provided a list of Room 177 names on the back of the newsletter.
This week the students have been studying math facts, synonyms, spelling, penmanship, problem solving in math, writing our own ways to be happy quotes, practicing math operations, reading, writing friendly letters, conjunctions, journaling, geometry, reading comprehension and activities, beginning out biome research and more. It has been a busy and wonderful week!

Congratulations to our Battle of the Books participants Finn, Kendall, and Robert! They represented Room 177 with grace and courtesy Tuesday morning. The students all worked hard for several months reading the books on the list, memorizing the authors and book titles, and practicing sample questions. Thank you to Mrs. Harth, our wonderful librarian, who helped prepare them for the battle. We are proud of all our battlers!
It is cold outside and we want your children to enjoy recess! We go out until the temperature reaches -10 degrees, so in order for your child to stay warm they need hats, gloves, snow pants, coat, and maybe a facemask. Thanks!
Our next scheduled field trip is Tuesday, February 21. We will leave the school at about 12:15 p.m. to walk to the Alaska Public Lands Information Office to learn about public lands, watch a movie about Alaskan animals, and participate in a scavenger hunt. We will return to school at about 3:00 p.m. This is a free field trip! I will send home permission slips next week.
This week the students have been studying geometry, prefixes, practicing math facts and operations, reading, writing friendly letters, learning about prepositions, journaling, vocabulary, reading comprehension and activities, learning about biomes, and more. It has been a busy and wonderful week!
If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at moyer_craig@asdk12.org of call or write me a note.

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a healthy and happy holiday season. The students seem eager to be back and are resuming their working routines. I’m looking forward to a great second semester!
I have sent second quarter report cards home in today’s folder. Please take a few moments to talk with your child to celebrate his or her accomplishments and discuss some areas he or she needs to improve. Teaching your children how to set goals is an important tool and gift that you can give them.
I sent homework for this Friday’s spelling test on Monday. If you didn’t get time to complete it during the short week, don’t worry. You can send in what you were able to get done or turn it in when you finish. Please let me know if you are not ready to take the test on Friday. We can always reschedule that as well. I want the students to be prepared to do their best. I have next week’s homework in today’s folder.
We welcomed a new third grade student, Rachel, to our classroom this week. The students were excited to show her around, teach her how to use various Montessori materials, and make her feel comfortable. I love the welcoming spirit of your children!
This week the students have been studying pronouns, geometry, practicing math facts, reading, writing friendly letters, journaling, learning about the scientific method, reading comprehension and activities, vocabulary, penmanship, and more. It is great to be back working with your children!
If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at moyer_craig@asdk12.org of call or write me a note.

Sincerely,
