Dear Parents,
The first payment for the Whittier trip is due tomorrow! We only have 3 families that have made a payment at this time. We need to make a 25% down payment tomorrow and the full payment by February 28th or we will have to cancel the trip. Please make the payment online or come to the office to make a payment. Thanks. Also, I only have two chaperones for next week's trip. I need to have at least two more. Thanks!
Our first filed trip of the new year, we will be going to the Performing Arts Center on Thursday, February 6 to see Alaska Junior Theater's production of "Dog Loves Books". We will leave the school at 11:00 and return about 1:15. This should be a fun musical performance! Please return permission slips and money as soon as possible. I have been instructed by Ms. Dene that any field trip that is not 100% paid for in advance will be canceled. I believe that the field trip experiences we go on are part of each student's education in so many ways. I appreciate all those that are able to provide scholarships for those students in need. I appreciate your support!
We are going to Whittier! The cost per person is $60, including chaperones. Our adventure will be on Friday, May 15th. This will be an all-day experience. Students need to arrive at school by 8:15 a.m. and the bus will leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. We will be traveling to Whittier by school bus. If you are planning on chaperoning you are welcome to drive yourself but please be aware of the additional tunnel fee to access Whittier. The glacier cruise itself is about 2.5 hours. Everyone will need to provide their own cold lunch for the day, please plan to send a nut-free lunch. If you are not comfortable sending your child on this trip, for any reason, there will be alternate learning locations at school to support them while we are away. We will return to school around 3:30pm. As a reminder, siblings are not allowed on this trip unless they are on the Lower Elementary team. Please pay your child's $60 fee through your Parent Connect account online. If you are paying for just your child you may choose the "Whittier" link. If you are also paying for a chaperone please choose "Lower El Cruise". If you would like to supply a scholarship for another child please select the "Donation- Lower El trip" option. Please pay as soon as possible as we have to make a 25% down payment by January 31 and have the total payment by February 28. Thank you to Ms. Homan, one of the super lower elementary teachers, for putting all the time and effort into making this trip happen! I'm very excited!
One of my favorite times of the year is fast approaching! Conferences will be held Monday, February 10 and Tuesday, February 11 from 7:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m. and Wednesday, February 12 and Thursday, February 13 from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Students will be released at 12:30 p.m. on February 12 and 13 and there is no school on Friday, February 14. The Conference Scheduler is now open. Scheduling early offers you the opportunity to secure conference times that work best for your family. Please visit the online scheduler on the district website. You will need to go to mix and find my name to find my schedule. If you are not able to use the online system, please call or email. I look forward to meeting with you all and celebrating your child's progress.
On Tuesday, February 11 we will have a valentine exchange and small party in the afternoon. If your child wishes to participate in the exchange, he/she must bring a valentine for each student. I have provided a list of Room 177 names on the back of the newsletter.
If you have any questions or concerns, please e-mail me at moyer_craig@asdk12.org of call or write me a note.
Sincerely,
Craig Moyer

Dear Parents,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a healthy and happy holiday season. The students seem eager to be back and are resuming their working routines. I'm looking forward to a great second semester.
I have sent second quarter report cards home in today's folder. Please take a few moments to talk with your child to celebrate his or her accomplishments and discuss some areas he or she needs to improve. Teaching your children how to set goals is an important tool and gift that you can give them.

Dear Parents,
It's hard to believe that the first semester has come to a close already. I'm really having a great time working with your children. They are a very kind, hard working, fun group to work with. Every year I am amazed at the growth that the students make. Your children, once again, amaze me. It is one of the true joys of my job.
We will be driving to Center Bowl tomorrow Tuesday, December 17! We will leave the school at about 12:30 and return about 2:30. Chaperones please meet in Room 177 by 12:15. A big thank you to Mr. Clapper, the owner of Center Bowl and grandpa to one of our students, for allowing us to bowl for free! What a wonderful gift! Thank you!
Thursday, December 19 we will be having a class Read-In. Students can bring a blanket, stuffed animal, pajamas, and a favorite book. I will be serving waffles, fruit and juice. This will be a fun event to celebrate a wonderful first semester!
During the winter break I encourage your children to continue reading at least 20 minutes a day so they keep up some of those newly learned skills. I wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.
Sincerely,
Craig Moyer

We will be driving to Center Bowl on Tuesday, December 17! We will leave the school at about 12:30 and return about 2:30. I neglected to include how many children you could take in your vehicle on the permission slip, so if those that volunteered to drive could email me how many seats you have available, I would appreciate it. A big thank you to Mr. Clapper, the owner of Center Bowl and grandpa to one of our students, for allowing us to bowl for free! What a wonderful gift! Thank you!
Holiday Night 2018 is tomorrow Friday, December 6th from 6:00-8:00. This event will be an opportunity for parents, students, faculty & staff to celebrate the season. On Monday, December 16 we will have our annual gingerbread house creating and decorating session from 12:20-2:00. The students have volunteered to bring the items listed on the handout to share with all when we decorate. You can send in these items any time before December 16. Dear Parents,
Our next scheduled field trip is on Friday, December 6. We will be walking to the Performing Arts Center to see master storyteller, David Gonzalez, bring to life his version of "Cinderella". This will be an incredibly entertaining event. We will leave the school at about 11:05 and return about 1:15. I will send home permission slips at a later date.
I am also very excited to announce that we have been invited to celebrate the end of a successful semester at Center Bowl on Tuesday, December 17! We will leave the school at about 12:30 and return about 2:30. This trip will need drivers to get us to the bowling alley. I will send home permission slips and all the details later.
The field trip news never ends! We have secured a date for the Lower Elementary Wing trip to Whittier for our glacier cruise! We will be cruising on Friday, May 15! We will leave the school at about 9:00 and return about 3:30 for a full day of fun! The price will be $60 for each student and chaperone attending. We need to have a deposit of 25% of the total by January, so we are asking everyone to make your payment now. We also need to know how many adults in addition to the students will be joining us, so Phillips Cruises & Tours can determine which boat they will be using. The payment link for Whittier is available on Parent Connect. You can pay on the "Whittier" option for your child, "Lower EL Cruise" for chaperones, and "Donations-Lower EL Trip Only" for any scholarships.
It's been a great week in Room 177! The students have been busy reading, writing letters, learning about problem solving in math, working on math facts and operations, contractions, vocabulary, geometry, spelling, continents and oceans, Andy Warhol and Pop Art, penmanship, telling time, money, fractions and more.
I am not sending homework in today's folder! Enjoy your Thanksgiving holiday!
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It is a time for us to gather with friends and family and reflect on the many things we are thankful for. I am very thankful for your support at home with your children, all the volunteers that help listen to students read, make copies, are able to join us on field trips, and everything else that makes my job so enjoyable. I am thankful for such a great group of students who care about each other, work well together, and are not afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. I hope you all have a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday.
If you have any questions or concerns, please email me at moyer_craig@asdk12.org or call or write me a note. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Craig Moyer
